It used to be said that the Red Devils were over-reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo when the Portuguese forward plied his trade at Old Trafford. The former United number seven regularly used to win matches on his own and scored forty-two goals last season to help his team win the Premier League and reach the final of the Champions League.
However, while Ronaldo was deployed in a central attacking position last term, it saw Sir Alex Ferguson move Wayne Rooney out to an unfamiliar wide position, one in which the England striker regularly looked uncomfortable. The Manchester United manager has subsequently spoken of his regret at seeing the 24-year-old floundering on the wing, with the forward now moved to a position which sees him spearhead the attack – often on his own.
Although quality players such as Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Ryan Giggs means that United are far from a one-man team, last Saturday’s shaky 1-0 win at Wolves illustrated that the champions do rely on Rooney as far as scoring goals is concerned. They certainly lacked a cutting edge with Dimitar Berbatov in attack on his own and there would certainly be a cause for concern if Rooney became injured.
With the striker in such hot form at the moment, Manchester United are a team that everyone else will want to avoid when the Champions League draw is made next week.

Which brinks me to Arsenal. They have played most part of this season without their best and most in form striker RVP, and they are still competing for titles. I think the whole team and AW in particular should be given a whole lot of credit for that.
Won’t you guys ever give up? For the last few seasons we have been a “one man team”, now that “one man” is no longer in our team, we are once again a “one man team”!
Isn’t it odd that having sold our “one man team” last summer, the “best player in the world”, istn it odd that he hasn’t managed to bring his new team similar success he brought us? How he hasn’t even managed to get them through to the quarter finals in the CL! Isn’t this odd? Or might it have something to do with the fact that football is a team game, and unless the team performs well as a unit 1 single player can’t make a team!
If I had a penny for every time UTD have been a one man team I’d pretty loaded!
