Steven Gerrard rightfully escapes punishment for V-sign gesture

Despite Sky Sports News and other media outlets trying to get the Liverpool captain into hot water, it appears that the Football Association won’t be taking any disciplinary action after Steven Gerrard appeared to make a V-sign in the direction of referee Andre Mariner on Monday night.

The Reds skipper cut a frustrated figure during the 1-0 defeat at Wigan and was yellow-carded in the second half for a foul on James McCarthy. Upon being given a booking, the midfielder appeared to throw two fingers in the direction of the Mariner, something which was caught on camera and replayed several times subsequently.

The fact of the matter is that footballers regularly use expletives on the field of play and the media need to stop making such a big play of trivial incidents such as this. You regularly see players mutter things under their breath when a decision goes against them and we should not expect them to be complete saints who don’t show their frustration in certain circumstances.

Rafael Benitez will have been making more than innocuous hand gestures after seeing his team’s lacklustre performance at Wigan and will be hoping that they can lift themselves for a tricky trip to Lille on Thursday.
