The Belgian season kicks off tonight with the Super Cup confrontation between league winners Standard Liege and Cup winners Genk, who finished 8th on last season’s league table.
Last season St Liege also won the season curtain raising fixture vs Anderlecht and are looking to retain the title for a 2nd season running.
It should not be too hard as Liege actually hold a 7-2-0 H2H record vs their tonight opponents for the last 9 games, with Genk last winning in May 2005.
The underdogs though will be hoping to record their 2nd Super Cup win since 2000, having won it back in 2002 after bating Club Brugge 2-0.
Armed with new signing, both sides are set to battle it out for the 1st silverware of the season, and it could be closer than most would expect.
Standard’s biggest move on the summer was signing Tiago from Vic. Guimares & Alex Moraes from Juventude but they lost their big American centerback Oguchi Onyewu who was transferred to AC Milan.
Genk’s new signing deals were done mostly with lower leagues sides, so it’s a bit too early to pass a judgment on whether they have developed better or worse that last season.
Last season Liege won at home 2-0 while they managed a goalless draw over Genk away, and it’s usually more than a 70% chance when either Standard Liege or Anderlecht play any other Belgian side that the “big two” side will win, so odds set @ 1.67 with either Betsson or CentreBet already represent value.
Standard Liege win @ 1.67 w/ CentreBet or Betsson
