Spain v USA preview

The European Champions Spain will be happy to come up against surprise package USA after expecting to play the World Champions Italy in this semi-final, but they won’t expect everything to go their own way.

USA snuck through to the semis with an emphatic 3-0 win over Egypt, who had just shocked Italy 1-0 in their previous match, and with veteran Landon Donovan up front are always capable of sneaking in a goal or two.

But after losing to both Brazil and Italy, the USA have every reason to fear the unbeaten Spaniards, with David Villa and Fernando Torres leading the attack. They will have the excellent Xavi in midfield, alongside Xabi Alonso with Fabregas waiting in the wings. Spain are probably the best team in the World today, and will be looking forward to testing that theory out against Brazil in the Final.

Spain are long odds-on to win the game, but with their potent strike force I can’t see any problem with them beating the handicap and winning by two goals. The USA are unlikely to perform as well as they did in their last game, and their opponents are far superior to Egypt anyway.

My pick: Spain -1.5 @ 1.90 from Stan James
