The noises coming out of Anfield are that Rafa Benitez is on the verge on losing the dressing room, more and more Liverpool players are commenting publicly on Benitez’s team selection, training methods and man management skills.
The latest player to come out and have a pop at the beleaguered manager is Albert Riera which on the back of Fernando Torres basically demanding that players are bought or he is out does not bode well for the Reds.
These two, Torres and Reira and just the latest two and by no means the only ones, we have had Babel constantly whine and reports have been swirling around the press of other players having had disagreements with Benitez.
But in terms of the most damning comments it is Riera’s that are most noticeable,
“When you stop playing in this manner it must be something personal,” Riera said. “If I’m doing something wrong and you are my boss and you count on me, then why not come and tell me what I need to do to play? That’s what really hurts.
“Torres and Reina encourage me. They tell me that they know that if I play, I will do well. But a week goes by and then another and another and nothing has been achieved. There shouldn’t be a lack of communication either, because I speak Spanish and my English isn’t bad either.
“In the two years I have been here he [Benítez] has never managed a situation with a player by talking to him. He thinks he is the boss and everyone else is deaf. The dialogue with the players is practically zero.”
That last line is rather explosive and probably quite true, the fact that a Liverpool player has come out and stated that dialogue with the players is zero points to something very wrong at Liverpool.
In the past Players like Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher had enough power to be able to go to the board and say this guy has lost the dressing room.
No point doing that now as it would make no difference, the club simply cannot afford to sack Benitez if all the reports of their financial woes are true.
But what is the cost of failure and can Liverpool continue the way they are? we think not.
