All the signs have been saying that the Man Utd boss Alex Ferguson had decided to bring in the prolific Dutch striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel next summer when Dimitar Berbatov’s contract runs out, but his hopes have been dashed yesterday when the Sporting Lisbon hitman vowed to remain in Portugal for a while longer.
Van Wolfswinkel said: “I will stay in Portugal for at least two years,”
“I came here to win trophies and I believe I can do that here.
“I will not leave. I signed a five-year contract and I am happy at Sporting. There is no reason to leave – the fans are fantastic and I am having a great time.”
But reports today are suggesting that Ferguson has turned his attention back to an old favourite of his, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who Fergie tried to sign when he was a young prodigy in Holland. The Dutchman instead moved to Real Madrid and later AC Milan, where he never got much chance to show his class and consistency.
But now he is at Schalke04 in the Bundesliga, and has started the season in fantastic fashion by scoring 16 goals in just 18 games. With just 18 months left on his contract in Germany, Huntelaar could easily force a move to Old Trafford by simply refusing to sign a new contract with Schalke.
According to Talksport, the simple solution for both sides would be to arrange for a straight swap in January, with Huntelaar coming to Old Trafford and Berbatov going to Schalke. Would Man Utd supporters fancy that as a good deal?
