Marek Hamsik continues to be linked with a move to the Premier League, but it is Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City, rather than rivals Man United, that now appear to be the front runners to land the Slovakian international who is valued at around £25million.
Hamsik, 24, has been linked with Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea and especially Alex Ferguson’s Man Utd, but earlier this week the Napoli coach Fausto Salsana claimed in the Italian press that Roberto Mancini was about to make a move for his midfield maestro.
Manchester United youngster Tom Cleverley signed a new four year contract this week, so United may now pull out of the race which leaves the door wide open for City to make their move.
A move they may make as money is no object at the Etihad Stadium, but they may have to wait for a little while yet as the players agent Mino Raiola has said, “Anything can happen in football, but these deals are only going to be activated at the end of the season.”
So the end of the season it may well be because Napoli are in the Champions League, in the same group as Man City, and after two games are in a far better position than the moneybags Premiership club with four points to Man City’s one.
Should the Italians progress beyond the group stages there is no chance of Napoli selling Hamsik in January, but should Man City get their act together and qualify at the expense of Napoli that move could happen this winter despite the comments made by Raiola.
