According to reports in the Italian press, Juventus have rejoined the race to sign Xabi Alonso, after failing to meet the demands of Rafael Benitez last summer. An article in Tuttosport said:
Juventus hald their annual general meeting yesterday, and afterwards it was revealed that the club had decided to make another attempt to sign Alonso from Liverpool. The negotiations for the Basque player of Liverpool has started four days ago. Juve has contacted the Reds, and Benitez was available to discuss the transfer. But they are to be up against competition from a formidable rival, namely the Real Madrid of Florentino Perez.
Precisely because of the presence of Los Merengues the price of Alonso has increased to 25 million, compared to 15-17 that Liverpool demanded last year.
There is no way that Juventus can compete financially with Real Madrid at the moment, and unless the Spanish giants refuse to meet Liverpools demands, i can’t see him moving to Italy. Is this just another story for the Italians to fill up space in their newspaper?
