There have been a number of reports in Spain and Portugal in the last few days suggesting that the ex-Chelsea and present Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho was being lined up as a temporary coach for the Portuguese national side, but Mourinho has hit back and claimed that the reports are lies.
Whilst managing Chelsea, Mourinho indicated that he be keen to take on the Portugal job when his contract finished at Stamford Bridge, but he doesn’t think that the time is right at the moment.
Portugal are in the play-offs for next seasons European Championships, but they will have to dispose of Bosnia-Herzegovina in a two legged affair first to ensure their place at next summers finals.
Reports earlier in the week suggested that the Portuguese Football Federation wanted Mourinho as coach to ensure their place, but at a press conference yesterday Mourinho said, “That is one big lie. It does not make sense. It is clear to me, to the federation and to Madrid that it is impossible. No-one has thought about it. There has not been any contact and this story should be over already.”
Mourinho has been linked with the Portugal job before, back in 2010, and again he was ruled out of the running. To manage your country is considered an honour, but it is clear by Mourinho’s latest comments that he wants nothing to do with the Portuguese Federation, but with The Special One anything is possible and there is probably more to come on this story in the coming weeks.
