If this game was played two months ago I would have probably sold my house and placed the money on Gijon to win. That’s how bad Villarreal started their season.
But a month ago, the Yellow Submarines shrugged off their bad form and started to rack up the points. 3 La Liga wins, 1 in the Europa League, another in the Cup and a tight loss away at Sevilla by 3-2, and to note that Sevilla are actually involved in the title race and are tied with both Barca and Real as the best 3 defenses in Spain gives you the idea that Villareal are well over their bad period and the only way for them now is up.
However, Gijon are quite solid at home and have yet to lose a home fixture. They have even already hosted Real Madrid (0-0), but they have a problem finding the goal as they have only scored once at most in each of their last 6 games in all competitions (a total of 4 goals in 6 games). There latest game ended goalless away at Xerez too (Xerez are the 2nd bottom team, and it was only their 3rd clean sheet of the season vs Gijon).
Both Alberto Botia and Roberto Canella missed that game with flu, but they’re both back as well as Diego Castro. There are no fresh injury worries for Gijon.
Cani is rated doubtful for the visitors, while Santiago Cazorla is not yet fit enough to participate, but it looks like Venta will miss out.
I certainly find the away win appealing on this one, but it’s always hard to go against a team that has not lost at home, so I’ll back the visitors on level ball just in case.
