Friday 15th Feb – Arsenal daily news round up

David Villa was their primary January target but Arsenal have given up on signing the Barcelona star. The Metro understands that the Gunners are ready to pull out of the race after the forward was admitted to hospital after complaining of abdominal pain. Manchester City and Tottenham have also been credited with interest in the Spaniard but the player’s fitness issues seems to have a brought an end to this chase.

Arsene Wenger will be a pleased man to see Thomas Vermaelen back in training ahead of his side’s crunch game against Bayern Munich next week at the Emirates. The Telegraph reports that the defender is back in full training and would be available for the weekend FA Cup game against Blackburn.

Cesc Fabregas was the darling of the fans at Arsenal but the midfielder may have upset some of the Gunners faithful after claiming that he would not to return to the London side as he is keen to finish his career at Barcelona. The Metro quotes the Spaniard talking about his plans for the future saying, “Now I have returned and I want to stay, if I can and if I deserve to, forever.”

Tottenham may have stolen Lewis Holtby from Arsenal but the Gunners are keen to repay the favor to their London rivals as the Daily Star claims that Arsenal are leading Tottenham in the race for German starlet Sebastian Rode, who plays for the Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt. Bayern Munich have also been credited with interest in the 22-year old midfielder while Spurs registered their interest with Frankfurt last summer.
