Former Liverpool boss lined up as Andre Villas-Boas replacement at Chelsea

In one of the most remarkable developments, the Daily Mail has claimed that former Liverpool and Inter Milan manager Rafael Benitez has been earmarked to replace the struggling Andre Villas-Boas at Chelsea. Guus Hiddink had earlier been touted as a possible replacement, but the veteran manager has taken over the managerial reins at Russian moneybags Anzhi Makhachkala and is therefore now unavailable.

Benitez has a wealth of experience in England with the Reds and has also tasted European success having guided Liverpool to a Champions League victory in Istanbul in the year 2005. Moreover, the Spaniard wants to return to England and knows how to get the best out of Fernando Torres, who seems to be having a torrid time in front of goal.

However, the biggest roadblock to this deal will be the fact that Benitez is not a popular figure among the fans and his appointment is unlikely to please them. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will also be wary of the fact that Benitez did struggle in his last year at Anfield and also had a less than successful stint with Inter Milan, a job that he managed to hold for only a little over six months. Moreover, Benitez is known to be a little wasteful as far as his transfer dealings are concerned having infamously signed flops such as Fernando Morientes, Jan Kromkamp, Robbie Keane, Alberto Aquilani, Ryan Babel, among others.

So your “story” is a load of bollocks then?

Torres was not a flop for Benitez, his faith in Lucas was proved correct and we are missing him now, Mascherano was fantastic. His poor last season was down to the former owners forcing him to sell players such as Xabi Alonso. He may have bought some in your words flops, but they were not flops when he brought them in they just failed to adapt to the English and or the Liverpool game but he got rid of them, name me a PL club that has not had the same problem, you can’t use the Manchester clubs or the other Mersyside club as they have had the same problem, some players fit straight away others take a bit longer, i.e. Lucas Enrique had a poor start in the UK but now is settled.

I don’t think Rafa would want the Chelsea job, he’s not short of money and is waiting for a return to the Liverpool ranks in some capacity, after all it was not the present owners who sacked him.

Load of bollocks. He has a good record with top end buys. Every manager has wasted money even morinho spent 60 mil for kaka and he is not even starting games. Anderson, Hargreaves, thie list is endless so shut the hell up, I’d take Benitez back any day
