Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp is targeting Lokomotiv Moscow midfielder Lassana Diarra to shore up his midfield.
The tough tackling Frenchman came through the ranks at Chelsea before representing Arsenal and then Portsmouth, where he played under Harry Redknapp. It was here where Diarra found his form as a senior player, winning a surprise FA Cup with the club before making an even more surprising £20 million move to Real Madrid.
Diarra made 87 league appearances in four years for Madrid before becoming part of Anzhi Makhachkala’s Russian revolution. When that resolution fizzled out last summer after Anzhi put all their players up for sale, Diarra moved to Russian league rivals Lokomotiv.
Redknapp will feel that he has a good chance of signing Diarra as he knows the player personally from his days at Portsmouth. Diarra will also likely be keen for another chance to play in the Premier League. Diarra was overlooked for the French team’s squad for this summer’s World Cup and his best chance of playing his way back to the top of the game is to be playing in one of the best leagues in the world. While there is quality in Russian football, it does not compare with the English Premier League at this moment in time.
Diarra’s £80,000 per week wages could prove a stumbling block, with there little indication of a fee that Lokomotiv Moscow would demand for the 29 year old.
