Everton and Tottenham join Aston Villa chase for star striker

Aston Villa were first in line to approach Groningen about the Swedish scoring sensation Marcus Berg, but now, according to this report from Sky Sports, Tottenham and Everton are also making enquiries.

The article said: A trio of Premier League clubs are set to fight it out for the signature of Sweden Under-21 hot-shot Marcus Berg.

Aston Villa, Everton and Tottenham have all been strongly linked with the striker but Bayern Munich and Fiorentina could also throw their hat into the ring.

After a prolific spell at IFK Gothenburg Berg switched to Dutch side FC Groningen for a reported £2.5million in summer 2007.

The money appeared to be well spent with the 22-year-old bagging 33 goals in 56 league games before he gained wider acclaim thanks to his performances at the Under-21 European Championship this summer where he topped the scoring with seven goals.
High asking price

However any move may be subject to how much Groningen value the frontman with Berg’s agent Martin Kette fearing the Eredivisie club may price his client out of the market.

“Yes, there are a couple of clubs who might be willing to pay, but it is a lot of money,” he told Expressen.

“We haven’t aimed for a specific market, we have worked four of five countries.”

It would be great to see this youngster in the Premier League. How much do you think your club should pay for him?
