Last Thursday the Man Utd striker Wayne Rooney was given a three match ban for his sending off in Montenegro, a ban that will rule him out of all three of England’s group games at next years Euro 2012 finals. In the last few days the debate has started to grow as to whether Rooney should be selected by Fabio Capello or be left at home, and the latest person to have their say is England’s World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst.
Already the questions have been asked as to who will replace Rooney, and Hurst thinks that if the replacements perform well Rooney may not find a way back into the squad. Speaking on Radio Five Live this morning Hurst said, “If they did well enough, I think the strong argument would be not to bring Wayne back. There is the opportunity, without Wayne, for the individual strikers to perform and ensure they play well in the first three games. If the strikers played well and scored goals, it would be a huge decision for Fabio Capello to make.”
For those of you who are old enough you will know that Hurst only got his chance in the 1966 World Cup finals due to an injury to Jimmy Greaves. As we all know Hurst took his chance and the rest is history.
Whether Rooney goes to the finals or not Hurst was quick to point out that England should have enough quality in their squad to at least get out of their group. He said, “We should have a good enough squad of 22 players that, with injuries and suspensions, can compete in the early rounds of a European Championship. I would be very disappointed if, even without Wayne playing, we did not qualify.”
The debate is sure to run and run and only yesterday former England skipper Alan Shearer said that Rooney should go. Only time will tell if Fabio Capello decides to take him, but the question is can England do without their talisman or is there another Geoff Hurst story waiting to be written?
