Dutch side FC Groningen have confirmed Liverpool’s interest in 16 year old wonderkid Richairo Zivkovic according to reports in the Daily Mirror. The teenage sensation incidentally plays for the club where controversial striker Luis Suarez first made his mark in Holland before landing himself a short ticket to the Amsterdam Arena where he captained Ajax briefly.
Zivkovic is primarily a winger and has already drawn comparisons in the press to his more illustrious compatriot Arjen Robben. Robben too made his mark in Groningen, for whom he held the record as their youngest ever goal scorer before Zivkovic broke it. Zivkovic is of Serbian descent but was born in Holland and has the opportunity to represent either country. So far, he has played for Serbia at youth level.
Groningen’s Executive Director Hans Nijland confirmed the interest of a number of top clubs, including Liverpool in the youngster. He is quoted in the Mirror as saying, “All the top clubs in Holland want him but Liverpool are here every week too. They are watching him closely and very keen.”
Zivkovic’s acquisition, should it happen this summer, would be very much in line with Liverpool’s new buy young philosophy.
