It has been a terrible season for Rafa Benitez and his men, and the Spaniard confidence in his side and his own abilities appear to be at an all time low.
Benitez even admitted he does not know what went wrong against Wigan and once a manager admits something like that you just know the writing is on the wall.
Confidence is shot at Anfield it now seems and even if the Liverpool boss didn’t put it so bluntly, his words are hinting at a major lack of confidence and a whole lot of bitterness.
“It depends on us,” Benitez reckoned. “If we don’t show we can beat teams then at the end it will be the same [as the Wigan defeat]” he added.
“When you lose you have to be disappointed but the way you lose is sometimes more important and in the first half we were just not good enough.
“I was surprised. I don’t know, really I don’t. I cannot understand it.
In addition Benitez still has problems with certain injured players
“We had some problems with Agger. He was sick and lost some weight,
“We had to be careful with him but he’s training now so hopefully will be okay.
“Benayoun had a problem with his ankle. We have to see – we have one more day. He wasn’t training today so we have to decide.”
Liverpool Dutch striker Ryan Babel also admitted confidence in the ranks to be at it’s lowest. “It will be harder in every game. It was going to be difficult even before this game,
“One defeat seems to spoil all the confidence that we have and then we have to start again.
With the defeat to WIgan, Liverpool cannot even be guaranteed playing in Europe next season at all. The Spaniard had previously promised the fans “a guaranteed” 4th spot finish, but the way it has turned out they would be lucky to finish 6th.
