Arsenal have been reported in yesterdays Daily Telegraph as being keen on the Porto defender Bruno Alves, widely known as the best defender in Portugal, but all the signs point to Chelsea being successful in their bid to bring him the Portugese international to Stamford Bridge.
He has been targeted to replace the aging Ricardo Carvalho, who had an injury-ravaged season this year. Carvalho has admitted he is on his way out of London, and Said yesterday that he is considering his options.
“I am available for a club who wishes to have me,” said Carvalho at Portugal’s training camp ahead the World Cup qualifiers.
“But before being approached, an agreement must be found with Chelsea, although I am delighted that several clubs are interested in me.
“I have had four extraordinary years at Chelsea till this year, which has not been very good, indeed the worst of my career. I wasn’t in great shape, because I haven’t played.
“But if there is no transfer, I will be fine at Chelsea.”
The Porto chairman has declared that he won’t let Alves leave until he has signed a replacement, and yesterday that feat was achieved when the Portugese champions signed the 20 year-old Brazilian central defender Maicon on a five-year contract.
All the signs point to the imminent arrival of Alves in West London. Watch this space!

Why would Chelsea need Bruno when they have Alex, Ivanovic and Mancienne
Why would we need Alves when we already have four players in that position (Terry,Alex,Ivanovič and Mancienne)?
Arsenal need him much more than Chelsea does. Chelski have great defenders already.
well one thing is forsure chelsea in the back isnt as strong as it used to be and anyone wil agree with that the best team for me this year i woiuld say are the teams like tottenham blackburn because the maj were unexceptable. but obviously chelsea wants him to get ricarrdo carvahlo outa there and to go to inter because jose mourinho wants him there because its his old defender but real madrid and barca are going to put their nose in there and bet over chelsea soo chelseas better be ready to waster over 35 million euros
