Celtic’s Scott Brown needs surgery on his ankle

New Celtic boss Tony Mowbray is going to need reinforcements urgently as the news comes in that Scott Brown could be out of contention for some time. An article in the Daily Express today reports:

TONY MOWBRAY may have to rethink his immediate plans to reshape Celtic following the loss of Scott Brown for more than a month.

With the midfielder requiring surgery on his damaged ankle, it could open the door for Scotland team-mate Paul Hartley to be offered a new deal to ease the mounting problems for the new manager.

Mowbray has already lost skipper Steven McManus for the start of the season and Gary Caldwell is suspended for the opening Premier League game of the campaign against Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

To lose three players with such a wealth of experience of top-flight football is a huge blow to Mowbray, who does have cash at his disposal to carry through much-needed first team strengthening.

Hartley has not been offered any deal so far by Celtic and is in Greece for talks with Iraklis on a two-year contract. Watching from the sidelines are other interested clubs, including his former side Hearts as well as Sheffield United, Ipswich Town and Queens Park Rangers.

Brown, above, is now paying the penalty for playing on during the latter stages of the season with his damaged ankle in what proved to be a vain attempt to help the Hoops retain the SPL title.

Already there are fears that he could be absent from Celtic’s crunch Champions League qualifier at the end of July.

The knock-on effect of that would be the likelihood of the midfield star failing to be fit in time for Scotland’s vital World Cup qualifier against Norway on August 12.
