Cardiff will stand in Scotland’s way

The Scottish newspaper the Daily Express quoted Cardiff boss Dave Jones telling the Scottish national side manager George Burley to forget about his Scottish international players in Cardiff being released earlier than the 4 days required by FIFA before the World Cup qualifier Scotland is scheduled to have in Oslo next August.

Burley had before been trying to convince the Football League to move back their starting date of next season that will conflict with his WC preparations, coming at the weekend just before his side’s trip to Norway in the midweek.

Earlier, the SPL agreed to move their start of the season which was initially set to kick off on August 8, the same date the English Football League has set to start the Championship. SPL was moved back a week though.

Burley’s failure to work a similar agreement with the FL left him at the mercy of Championship clubs managers to decide whether to consider Scotland’s best interest of their own, even though it’s one of 46 games each club will have, and hardly affects anything at the start of the season.
