Former England manager Fabio Capello believes his fellow Italian Antonio Conte will lead Chelsea to Premier League success this season.
The Blues are currently eight points clear at the top of the league ahead of rivals Manchester City in second. After a poor title defence under Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink last season, many are impressed that Conte has been able to turn things around so quickly.
One man who isn’t surprised, though, is Capello. The Sun reported the Italian talking ahead of the Laureus Sports Awards in Monaco on Tuesday:
“It’s not a surprise. I know him well and he did good things with teams in Italy like Siena and Juventus. He is a really smart manager and understands how to work with players”.
Under Conte, Chelsea equalled a Premier League record of 13 wins in a row between October and January, which has put them in pole position to take the title in May.
The Blues are in FA Cup action this weekend against Wolves, as they look to book their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Without European football, the club has been able to concentrate on domestic success, something that their close rivals have been unable to do.
The likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham all had Champions League or Europa League games to play earlier this season, which led to a busy fixture list.
On top of their Europa League campaign, which continues against AS Saint-Etienne on Thursday, United also reached the final of the League Cup. They play Southampton on Sunday, February 26 at Wembley.
Conte will be looking for a positive response after his Chelsea team dropped two points away to Burnley in a tough fixture last weekend. Although the Premier League may be his priority, the Italian will certainly want a taste of cup glory too.
