Capello and the FA are heading for a showdown over Terry issue

The long unending soap opera that is the England football team saw another chapter written in what felt like a repetitive story with John Terry getting the boot from captaincy for the second time due to the alleged racist remarks he made to Anton Ferdinand in a League match at Loftus Road last October.

While Terry continues to be the central figure in this melodrama, the director of the piece, Fabio Capello must be left wondering when he can hope to have a few simple months in charge without some unnecessary controversy distracting his team’s preparations for Euro 2012.

Speaking about the latest controversy, Capello lashed out at the English FA, stating that he did not “approve” of the decision to strip Terry of the captaincy. Speaking to an Italian television channel Capello said, “I completely disagree with the FA about the John Terry decision and I have told that to the chairman.”

Capello continued, “I told him that I don’t think someone can be punished until it becomes official. I considered and still consider Terry as the England captain. I think we first should wait for the trial conclusion.”

Despite Capello’s view on proceedings, the FA decided that it was in the best interest of English football that Terry was no longer the captain. Capello’s perspective while completely understandable, carries considerably less weight now considering his contract expires this summer and it is highly unlikely that he will either be offered or accept a new contract.
