More complications in the African Zone group One emerged with Gabon not only racking up 3 more points, but scoring 3 goals against Togo yesterday, which puts today’s pair in a do or die situation as they both lost in the 1st round. With only 4 games to go, the loser will virtually be out of the race as they will need to make up for 6 points deficit, and in a group like this it may prove an almost impossible mission to accomplish.
Cameroon lost by 0-1 to Togo in the 1st round, in a game that was nominally Togo’s but was played in Ghana instead as Togo were banned to play at home by FIFA.
Morocco lost at home to Gabon, and it was a disgraceful display they offered for a team of their status. If they play like that again they’re not only risking the WC ticket of the group, but may end up rock bottom and miss out on the African Cup of Nations as well.
The last time these two met was in a friendly back in 2005 and it ended goalless. This is also a very possible outcome today, as Morocco will make a very cautious approach to avoid a 2nd defeat, but –at the same time- a draw will put them both in a “must win all remaining 4 games” situation.
Still, under 2.5 looks like the call for this one. It’s going to be tight and nervy and could be decided by a mere mistake or a ball deflection.
