A tough encounter for both sides, but it’s slightly harder for the hosts. The title defenders are in a must win situation to keep their fate in their own hands, especially with the next (last) game being away to Dynamo Kiev.
Inter are on a better position since they already top the group before tonight’s round, and will be hosting Rubin Kazan next up in the San Siro, but their problem is they rarely ever win in this competition, so even the home fixture does not mean 3 guaranteed points for them.
In 2003 the two had met each in the group stage as well, but Barca played at home first. They managed a 3-0 home win back then, while the game in Milan ended goalless, just as this season’s game in Milan did.
I suspect this is why Inter managed a 3-1 away win at Bologna in the weekend, while Barca settled for a 1-1 draw at Bilbao, forfeiting La Liga table top spot to bitter rivals Real Madrid ahead of the Classico next weekend.
Although this is the case, Barca are now between two fires. They play Inter tonight and then Real at the weekend, and cannot afford to slip up in either game. Well, maybe there will always be room for them to remedy the situation in La Liga, but in the CL it’s a do or die mission really, so they get my vote tonight.
