Australia take on Japan for a mere decider of the top team of the group, both having already officially qualified to the finals. The reverse fixture ended goalless in Japan, but this one probably will have at least one goal scored because neither side is under any kind of pressure.
Friendlies are hard to predict as you don’t know what line-up to expect from either side, nor what the motivation is, but here it could be even trickier because both sides have named nominally strong sides, yet you can never tell how motivated the players could be after having completed their main mission.
Japan needs an away win to climb to the top, while Australia will be happy with another draw that keeps them atop by virtue of goal difference.
Last 3 H2H meetings:
Japan 1 – 3 Australia (2006 World Cup Finals in Germany)
Japan 1 – 1 Australia (2007 Asian Cup of Nations, with Japan winning on PK shoot outs)
Japan 0 – 0 Australia (2009 WC Qualifier in Japan)
I think the draw will keep them both happy, and for the fun of it I will be betting on a 1-1 correct score.
