Arsenal scouts monitoring Valencia winger

Spanish radio has reported on Arsenal scouts being present at last nights Europa League game between Atletico Madrid and Valencia and the player they were apparently keeping their eye on was none other than David Silva. Arsene Wenger has been linked with Silva before however the expected high cost always made it difficult to see Silva ending up at The Emirates with Wenger not being one to splash the Arsenal cash in huge amounts.

It would also be interesting to know how the Spanish media have linked Arsenal scouts at last nights game with an interest in Silva, why not Villa or any other number of players including the giant forward Nikola Zigic both whom have been linked with Arsenal in the past. Arsenal scouts being at high profile games is no secret, Wenger does have a network of scouts in all major European countries but not sure that the media in Spain have attained the ability to read minds just yet.

Silva would certainly fit the type of player that Wenger would go for, he is young, creative and very talented but he would not come cheap and figures in the past have mentioned fees in excess of €20 Million and while Arsenal can afford that even without selling any players like Cesc Fabregas it would break with Wenger’s traditional methods in the transfer market.

Wenger has spent big before, the last big purchase being Andrei Arshavin but the cost of luring Silva to the Emirates would be significantly higher and that is were the reports fall down in my opinion. That said Arsenal scouts were in Madrid last night and they may well be looking at Silva though it is just as likely that the Spanish press like their English counterparts have made 2 plus 2 equal 5 and totally misread the situation.
