According to SportItalia, The Gunners are starting to give up on signing Fulham and Australia’s veteran goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, and even his alternate on their list Maarten Stekelenburg who plays for Ajax also appears to be a distant target by now, so Arsene Wenger is turning his attention elsewhere to find a proper goalkeeping options in the new season.
The same source claims Arsenal telephoned Serie A outfit Cagliari to see if the Sardinian side is willing to make a deal regarding their goalkeeper Federico Marchetti, who had stood in for the injured Gianluigi Buffon during Italy’s disastrous WC campaign.
The inquiry received by the Cagliari president Massimo Cellino was apparently triggered by the 27 year old shot-stopper submitting a transfer request to his club, which lead The Gunners to believe he could be available for them to sign and end their search for a proper replacement to Manuel Almunia who is rumoured to be on his way out to join La Liga outfit Osasuna.
Marchetti also didn’t feature in the Rossoblu friendly vs Bastia, and was booed by the fans in the game that was ‘less friendly’ than supposed to be and was eventually called off.
